List of Human Parasites

Human parasites are organisms that live inside of us and use our body as hosts. Since these organisms are unable to produce food for themselves, they use our body for survival. They are microscopic flesh eating creatures that consume the nutrients that we absorb and they destroy our cells and tissues. They also produce toxic waste that can cause humans to become ill.

In a recent study, it is estimate that about 50% of the U.S. population is infected with at least one type of harmful parasite. However, only about 25% of these people actually have symptoms which makes it hard to treat since most people are unaware that these harmful creatures are living inside their body.

There are two types of human parasites.

1. Protozoa and amoebae are small microscopic organisms that are spread by food, water, air, insect bites, animals, and human contact.

2. Parasitic worms and flukes are the second type. This type of organisms are much larger and consist of tapeworms, roundworms, and ringworms. These types of worms are usually aquired when humans consume contaminated meat.

It's the smaller human parasites that pose the greatest risk to people. These protozoa and amoebae can travel through your intestines, muscles, your bloodstream and to your vital organs and can pose considerable damage to their hosts along the way. Since they are small and light, they can be inhaled through the air.

Here is a list of some of the common parasites that can affect humans.

Protozoa

Giardia Lamblia
Other than pinworms, this is the most common case of infections. These little creatures reside in the intestines and spread by fecal contamination and through water. It can be found in tap water and natural streams as well.

Toxoplasma gondii
This is a common human parasite that likes to invade the central nervous system. Most people become infected with Toxoplasma gondii by eating uncooked meat. Most individuals never even show symptoms of this infection.

Entamoeba histolytica
This is a one-celled organism thats known for producing a disease called amebiasis. Poor sanitation contributes to this infection including unsafe sexual practices. Entamoeba histolytica can be found in damp environments including water, and can contaminate fruits and vegetables. This parasite is the leading cause of death after Malaria by protozoa.

Cryptosporidium
This single celled parasite causes serious gastrointestinal problems by infecting the digestive tract. It is usually spread when someone comes in contact with feces. This organism is uusually found outdoors and it can contaminate public water supplies, as well as lakes and streams. It can also be spread by unsafe sexual practices.

Worms

Roundworms
This is one of the most common human parasites. Usually people can get infected by ingesting eggs that can be found in fruits, soil, and vegetables. These little eggs move their way from your intestines to your organs where they can cause serious harm.

Tapeworms
These parasites are pretty common in animals such as dogs and cats but are pretty rare in humans. This little worms resides in the intestines where it steals valuable nutrients and release dangerous waste. It's possible that humans might not show symptoms of this infection.

Pinworms
Probably the most common human parasite in the U.S. Pinworms usually makes its home in the body's colon, but lays its eggs outside of the host's body. This parasite can be spread through clothes, bed sheets, and dirty hands.

Hookworms
Intestinal human parasite that attaches itself to the human intestines where it drinks blood. This worm actually has little teeth and is considered flesh-eating. It can be ingested through contaminated fruits and vegetables and contaminated water.

Liver Fluke
Flat worm that attacks liver by making holes and causing inflammation. It can live inside humans for an estimated 30 years. Liver fluke can be ingested through eating under cooked fish, contaminated vegetables, or drinking contaminated water.
